650,000 people are released from prison in the U.S. every year, and a few million more (!) are released from local jails, often with no money, no job, no housing, not eligible for most public assistance programs and legally barredfrom most of the skilled trades and many other professions.
Over 50% are then back in prison within 3-5 years, at a devastating cost to them, to their families, and to society.
The #1 predictor of success for these individuals is access to jobs that pay a living wage, and that's our mission at 2nd Chance Planet.
We are about to open our first job training and employment center, by buying a new and used office furniture store in West Hartford, CT. We will use this business to put ex-inmates to work in the reuse and recycling industries, giving the planet a 2nd Chance, too.
I have funded the project so far by myself, including website and ecommerce software, legal and administrative costs and point of sale equipment.
For initial operating capital, we are receiving a loan of $15,000 from The Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, funded by The Andy Schatz & Barbara Wolf Family Foundation.
We have another $6,000 in net earnings from online sales and other projects, and other donations and loans of about $5,000. This is enough to cover our down payment on buying the store.
We still need about another $5,000 for truck repairs and other equipment before we open on June 1, 2017.
Help us get the rest of the way.
