It's Happening! We're OPEN!!!
I'm incredibly excited. With your help, after three years of planning, 2nd Chance Planet has opened its doors at 74-1 Park Road, West Hartford, CT. We have taken over a new and used office furniture store, called Value Office Furniture, at that location.
2nd Chance Planet, Inc. is a Connecticut Benefit Corporation, offering job training and employment at a living wage to those who were formerly incarcerated or have other criminal justice involvement and are having trouble getting hired because of their records. We help these struggling individuals to successfully transition to rewarding and meaningful employment and community life.
Training and employment are provided in 2nd Chance's own warehouse, workshop, and reuse store and on liquidation and cleanout job sites. This work will enable the reuse or recycling of consumer goods, to save natural resources and reduce global warming, giving the planet a 2nd Chance, too.
100% of profits will be reinvested in this mission.
The 2CP business model starts with the "thrift-store" concept and transforms it with innovation, growing it into a new model with the intention of mainstreaming the reuse of stuff. 2nd Chance Planet hopes to bring the traditional thrift store into the 21st century and make it a popular choice for the average shopper
The vision for the 2CP physical stores is a big-box department store full of like-new or very lightly-used stuff, including clothing, furniture, appliances, electronics and more.
To help mainstream the idea of reusing good stuff, 2CP stores will be clean, white, brightly lit, artistically decorated, uniquely organized, and have knowledgeable, articulate staff. They will feel more like an IKEA or a Macy's than a traditional thrift-shop.
Unlike any existing non-profit thrift-store chain, our store already has a website where users will soon be able to buy most of what's in our store, and we will soon launch an app that will allow easy browsing and searching of merchandise, and for shoppers who sign up, notifications of when items of interest appear, whether it's a certain designer brand of office chair, a maroon leather recliner, a 60" drafting table or a vintage Victrola. The app will also facilitate donating stuff or offering it for consignment by letting the user snap a photo that gets sent to us with a request for pickup or a mail-in kit.
Donations of great stuff for us to refurbish and sell will also be accomplished by outreach to corporations, government entities, universities and other institutions, large and small. (Can you help with one of these?) Consignment will also be available, where people with higher-value items sell them through us and we split the dough. Offering consignment will motivate another wide swath of potential donors.
Shoppers will also have the option to buy new merchandise at very competitive prices as a means of exposing more traditional buyers to our used inventory.
All these innovations will help us to mainstream the reuse of stuff, and to build a big-box 2nd Chance Planet reuse store in every community in America, creating thousands of jobs for individuals with challenging backgrounds. Watch out Walmart! Here comes 2nd Chance Planet!
